Ethanol – C2H6O

This page presents information about ethanol (C2H6O) – or ethylic alcohol – characteristics, effects on health, detection devices & systems – ethanol gas detector – and respiratory protective equipment (gas mask or powered air purifying respirator with A gas filter) against these vapors.

Ethanol properties

Sugar fermentation into ethanol (C2H6O) – also known as ethylic alcohol or alcohol – is one of the oldest biotechnologies used to produce alcoholic beverages. It is used as a solvent or disinfectant in industries and as a raw material to produce many compounds. If concentrated and hydrated, ethanol becomes bioethanol – a biofuel (European E85) – that is mixed with gasoline or diesel.

Ethanol effects on health

Ethanol (C2H6O) is a colorless volatile liquid with a sweet smell detectable from 84 ppm. It can easily be inhaled or absorbed through skin. Intoxication acute symptoms by ingestion are well-known and essentially neuropsychic: intellectual and physical excitation, coordination deficiency then alcohol coma and even respiratory paralysis.

Ethanol gas detector - C2H6O

Even if this gas can be detected through smell, only a C2H6O gas detector can accurately measure concentrations of ethanol vapor in the air. Moreover, as this gas is explosive, it is advised to use a combustible gas detector to get efficient explosive measuring range for ethanol detection (percentage of the lower explosive limit LEL).

The PAC® 8000 portable gas detector can accurately monitor concentrations of special gases like phosgene (COCl2), organic vapors (OV), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxide (NO).

MX6 6 gas detector (EXPLO, toxic and/or VOC): very large range of detected gases (IR absorption or electrochemical sensor), volatile organic compounds (VOC) with photoionization (PID) from 0 to 2,000 ppm.

Multigas detector – MX6 ATEX – UP TO 6 GASES

MX6 6 gas detector (EXPLO, toxic and/or VOC): very large range of detected gases (IR absorption or electrochemical sensor), volatile organic compounds (VOC) with photoionization (PID) from 0 to 2,000 ppm.

Portable gas detector MX6
  • Detection of the combustible gases, CL2, CLO2, CO, CO2, H2, HCN, HCl, H2S, NO, NO2, NH3, O2, PH3, SO2, VOC (volatile organic compounds)
  • Colored graphic LCD display for better view on gases concentrations. Simultaneous and continuous display of all gases.
  • Available with optional sampling pump
  • User-friendly multilingual menu for easy operation
Additional information

The MX6-iBrid gas detector is an high-tech portable multigas detector. Thanks to its rechargeable ion-lithium (Li-ion) battery, it can operates around 24 hours continuously. The optional extended battery can replace the standard one and extend the autonomy up to 36 hours. A lighter version with AA battery is also available for 10 hours of operation.

The MX6-iBrid portable multigas detector can detect up to 6 gases simultaneously according to the configuration (some locations are dedicated to specific sensors). A large range of gases is furthermore available: combustible gases, chlorine (Cl2), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen (H2), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ammonia (NH3), oxygen (O2), phosphine (PH3), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and many volatile organic compounds (VOC).

The MX6-iBrid combines the highest sensor technologies for accurate measures. Oxygen and toxic gases are detected with an electrochemical sensor. Combustible and explosive gases are on the other hand detected with a catalytic sensor or through infrared absorption. This IR technology is also used to detect carbon dioxide. Lastly, volatile organic compounds are detected with a photoionization sensor (<10,6 eV).

This portable multigas detector is considered as a high-technology device as it is the first portable gas detector featuring a colored display. This allows users to easily read events curbs of every gas without misunderstanding. The MX6-iBrid is compliant with the most demanding ATEX standards and with the IP67 ingress protection level thanks to its shock-resistant polycarbonate overmolded housing.

  • Detection of hydrocarbons, solvents, toxic gases, freons, VOC, CO2
  • Housing made of aluminium with epoxy paint (optional 316L Stainless Steel version)
  • Outputs: OLC100: Wheatstone bridge – OLCT100: 4-20 mA linear
  • Power supply: 15.5 to 32 VDC
  • ATEX & SIL 2 approved for catalytic and infrared versions
Additional information

Thanks to the wide variety of sensor technologies that can be used with this monitor, the OLCT100 fixed gas detector can detect a large range of gases. The combustible gases can be detected with a catalytic or infrared sensor, toxic gases with an electrochemical sensor, freons with a semiconductor sensor and carbon dioxide with an infrared sensor.

Two outputs types are available for this fixed gas detector range. The first one is the 4-20 mA analog output. It can be used to detect combustible, toxic and asphyxiating gases but also solvents, freons or carbon dioxide. The second output version is a Wheatstone bridge for the detection of combustible gases (0-100% LEL only).

Many accessories are available for the OLCT100 gas detector to improve sensor response time or to get optimal implementation.

The OLC/OLCT100 range is available under 5 versions:

  • OLC100 : Wheatstone bridge output detector to detect the combustible gases (0-100% LEL only)
  • OLCT 100 XP: Explosion-proof version equipped with a catalytic, electrochemical or semiconductor sensor to detect the combustible or toxic gases or oxygen.
  • OLCT 100 IS: Extremely reliable version to detect toxic gases or oxygen.
  • OLCT 100 XP IR: Explosion-proof version equipped with an infrared sensor to detect the combustible gases or CO2
