Ethanol properties

Sugar fermentation into ethanol (C2H6O) – also known as ethylic alcohol or alcohol – is one of the oldest biotechnologies used to produce alcoholic beverages. It is used as a solvent or disinfectant in industries and as a raw material to produce many compounds. If concentrated and hydrated, ethanol becomes bioethanol – a biofuel (European E85) – that is mixed with gasoline or diesel.

Ethanol effects on health

Ethanol (C2H6O) is a colorless volatile liquid with a sweet smell detectable from 84 ppm. It can easily be inhaled or absorbed through skin. Intoxication acute symptoms by ingestion are well-known and essentially neuropsychic: intellectual and physical excitation, coordination deficiency then alcohol coma and even respiratory paralysis.

Even if this gas can be detected through smell, only a C2H6O gas detector can accurately measure concentrations of ethanol vapor in the air. Moreover, as this gas is explosive, it is advised to use a combustible gas detector to get efficient explosive measuring range for ethanol detection (percentage of the lower explosive limit LEL).

Thanks to the wide variety of sensor technologies that can be used with this monitor, the OLCT100 fixed gas detector can detect a large range of gases. The combustible gases can be detected with a catalytic or infrared sensor, toxic gases with an electrochemical sensor, freons with a semiconductor sensor and carbon dioxide with an infrared sensor.

Two outputs types are available for this fixed gas detector range. The first one is the 4-20 mA analog output. It can be used to detect combustible, toxic and asphyxiating gases but also solvents, freons or carbon dioxide. The second output version is a Wheatstone bridge for the detection of combustible gases (0-100% LEL only).

Many accessories are available for the OLCT100 gas detector to improve sensor response time or to get optimal implementation.

The OLC/OLCT100 range is available under 5 versions:

  • OLC100 : Wheatstone bridge output detector to detect the combustible gases (0-100% LEL only)
  • OLCT 100 XP: Explosion-proof version equipped with a catalytic, electrochemical or semiconductor sensor to detect the combustible or toxic gases or oxygen.
  • OLCT 100 IS: Extremely reliable version to detect toxic gases or oxygen.

The X-am 5000 5 gas monitor is the world’s smallest handheld multi gas detector. This personal safety equipment has been especially designed to accurately and reliably detect the presence of combustible and toxic gases, amines and organic vapors but also to monitor the presence of oxygen in ambient air.

With its ultra-compact size and its low weight, the X-am 5000 monitor is easy to wear, attached to a pocket or directly on a collar in order to measure concentrations inhaled by its users. This device features two buttons to navigate the intuitive and user-friendly menus.

The interchangeable Ex catalytic sensors used in this detector can be easily replaced for use in a large number of applications. These sensors are engineered for measures from the lower explosive limit (LEL) up to 100% of the volume. Because they are interchangeable, these catalytic gas detection sensors can be easily replaced. The user can also add sensors to upgrade a detector in order to detect new gases. Moreover, these sensors feature excellent stability and enhanced resistance against poisons like hydrogen sulfide or silicon. Their lifetime can exceed 4 years.

In compliance with the IP67 standard, the X-am 5000 5 gas monitor is airtight to dust and water. Thanks to its rubber housing, this detector is also resistant to shocks, vibrations and impacts in order to be used in the most difficult environments.

Thanks to an optional external pump, the X-am 5000 can also be used to draw remote samples up to 30 meters away. This pump can be easily and quickly mounted and removed and requires no tool. This way, operators can easily switch from diffusion mode to pump mode in order to control the presence of hazardous concentrations of gases before any intervention in confined space – for applications in tanks for example).

Lastly, the X-am 5000 portable multi gas detector is available with two power supply opportunities: either with alkaline batteries or with a rechargeable T4 battery. Furthermore, its integrated data logger can store up to 1,000 hours of data per interval of one minute.

The X-plore 800 PAPR respirator system has been especially designed to enable its user to operate safely in toxic environments.
