Masks and protection for phytosanitary treatment

Find in this section all our phytosanitary protection equipment. From the simple half-mask (at least) or full mask equipped with A2-P3 filters to PAPR (powered air purifying respirators) and hazmat suits. Every year we deplore numerous intoxications with severe consequences due to using pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, and other products that are dangerous to health. All these products are very closely monitored and subject to several regulations.

The dangers of phytosanitary products

Phytosanitary treatment (the exact term is phytopharmaceutical) is the action of treating crops to reduce the development of diseases and pests. It includes using pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, and other biological or synthetic products for plant treatment. The utilization of these products is not trivial, and providing phytosanitary protection is a matter of common sense.

Every year, many cases of intoxication appear, sometimes with severe consequences, ranging from temporary skin allergies to respiratory system irritation (asthma, breathing difficulties, etc.). Recurrent exposure to phytosanitary products can create chronic intoxication with possible consequences on health (cancer, child health, disruption of the reproductive system, etc.).

Which phytosanitary protection

Mask for phytosanitary treatment

Whether you are a farmer or a resident living near a treatment area (e.g. spraying), you should take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. The wearing of respiratory protection equipment is highly recommended to protect oneself from undesirable effects linked to the use of chemical products:

  • Half-masks (at a minimum) only cover the lower part of the face (nose and mouth) and do not protect the eyes against irritating substances.
  • Full face masks cover the entire face (nose, mouth, and eyes) and are particularly suitable in toxic environments with a potential danger for the mucous membranes of the eyes (chlorine or ammonia-based products or nitrogen fertilizers).
  • Powered air purifying respirators are more elaborate filtering devices. Their main advantage is the reduction in respiratory effort due to a motorized fan that supplies the filtered air directly into the facepiece (full face mask or hood) via a ringed hose. Therefore, this equipment is better for strenuous, tiring, and long-duration work.

For efficient respiratory protection, and following the phytosanitary products used, we might prefer using an A2-P3 filtering cartridge to filter dust, particles, aerosols, and organic compounds (alcohols, aromatic gasoline, benzene, butyl glycol, phenols, turpentine, trichloroethylene, etc.).

Hazmat suits for phytosanitary treatment

In addition to respiratory protection (essential) and to protect oneself against allergies or skin irritations when spraying phytosanitary products such as pesticides, fungicides, or chemical fertilizers, a hazmat suit is highly recommended.

Whether disposable or reusable, a category 3 type 4 or 5 clothing that is impervious to aerosols and splashes of chemical or biological products is preferred, ideally made of polypropylene covered with a microporous film for its breathability and long-duration work.
