Gas mask filter selection

Find out in this section how to select the right gas mask filter. Respirator cartridges are used with half-mask respirators, full-face mask respirators or powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) to filter contaminated air. However in presence of asphyxiating substances, which reduce the oxygen rate, the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is required.

Filtering air purifying respirator usage limits

A filtering APR (gas mask or powered air purifying respirator) should not be used in the following situations:

  • When the oxygen rate is under 19%.
  • When working in a confined space or a poorly ventilated area like tunnels, tanks or boat slips
  • When the pollutant concentration is unknown or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH)
  • When the pollutant concentration exceeds the maximum allowed concentration of the filter
