Hydrogen bromide - HBr
This page presents the main information on hydrogen bromide (HBr), its physical characteristics, its effects on health, detection equipment (hydrogen bromide gas detector) as well as the appropriate respiratory protection equipment (gas mask or powered air purifying respirator with combined B-P3 filter).
Hydrogen bromide (Hbr) properties
Hydrogen bromide is used in many fields such as pharmaceutics, chemicals, electronics, metallurgy, mining, petroleum, the polymer industry and many more. It is used to manufacture alkyl bromides, it is also used as a reducing agent or as a catalyst for alkylation and oxidation reactions.

Hydrogen bromide effects on health
Hydrogen bromide (HBr) is a colorless gas but with an irritating odor. When there is moisture in the air, the gas then becomes smoking. On a short time exposure, hydrogen bromide is irritating and corrosive to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Over a long time or chronic exposure, there is a link between hydrogen bromide and the risk of laryngeal cancer.

Hydrogen bromide respiratory protection (HBr)
As hydrogen bromide is very irritating to the eyes as well as to the respiratory tract, it is recommended to use a powered respirator (more comfortable), with combined B-P3 filters. In case of emergency interventions, a self-contained breathing apparatus will be imperative.
